Is Rockwall, TX a good place to retire? Yes. Rockwall County is the smallest and wealthiest county in Texas, with lake living on Lake Ray Hubbard, two full-service hospitals, $2.2 billion in active construction, a violent crime rate 69% below the national average and no state income tax on retirement income.
We opened a satellite office in Heath, Texas because our clients kept telling us the same thing.
“I wish we had done this sooner.”
After years of helping pre-retirees and retirees across the Dallas-Fort Worth area make the most important financial decisions of their lives, we kept watching the same migration pattern play out. Families selling their Preston Hollow or Plano homes and quietly moving east to Rockwall, Heath, Fate, and Royse City. To the lake. To the space. To a community that felt, as one client put it, “like the DFW that used to exist.”
We decided to come see it for ourselves. And then we decided to stay.
Here’s what we found and why we believe Rockwall County represents one of the most compelling retirement opportunities in the entire state of Texas.
Why Is Rockwall County Financially Strong?
Let’s start with the numbers, because numbers don’t lie.
Rockwall County is the smallest county in Texas by land area, just 149 square miles. It is also the wealthiest, with an average household income of $162,868 and a poverty rate of just 4%. That combination of small geography and exceptional wealth means something very specific for retirees: a well-funded community with the resources to maintain excellent public infrastructure, responsive services, and the kind of civic investment that protects quality of life long term.
You’re not moving somewhere that peaked. You’re moving somewhere that is still becoming its best self.
What New Communities Are Being Built in Rockwall County?
Rockwall County currently has 748 active construction projects valued at $2.2 billion. Three major master-planned communities are underway:
- Juniper: 885 homes across 526 acres with 126 acres of open space.
- Southside Hills: 384 lots with direct Lake Ray Hubbard access.
- Erwin Farms: 123 luxury lots priced between $750,000 and $1.2 million.
And right next door to our Heath office, Heath Golf & Yacht Club continues to grow as one of the premier master-planned resort communities in North Texas: 800 acres, a private championship golf course, a community boat dock, resort pools, and pickleball courts.
Serious builders with serious capital are betting on this community. That’s not a coincidence, it’s a signal.
What New Shopping Is Coming to Rockwall, TX?
In October 2025, H-E-B opened a 131,000-square-foot flagship store at I-30 and John King Blvd. In May 2026, IKEA Rockwall opened, the first IKEA east of I-35 in the entire Metroplex.
Developer PegasusAblon is now building Rockwall Heights, a 65-acre mixed-use district at I-30 and Stodghill Road with more than 350,000 square feet of retail, restaurants, a hotel, and a central amphitheater. This is the kind of investment that permanently changes a city’s identity.
The answer to “Is there enough out there?” is now simply: yes.
Why Lake Ray Hubbard Changes Everything
Twenty-two thousand acres. That’s how much water Lake Ray Hubbard puts at your doorstep.
Fishing, boating, sailing, water skiing, and evening sunsets over open water aren’t weekend activities here; they’re part of ordinary daily life. The Harbor on Summer Lee Drive brings lakefront dining, entertainment, and outdoor concerts to the water’s edge year-round. Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club adds an 18-hole championship course and three pools, while the nearby Oasis Pickleball Club, with 42 courts, is the largest pickleball facility in Texas.
For active retirees, Rockwall County punches well above its weight class.
What Hospitals Serve Rockwall, TX?
Texas Health Hospital Rockwall recently completed a $91 million expansion, a CMS 5-Star rated facility with a Cardiac Cath Lab, Level 1 NICU, expanded emergency and surgical departments, and a second full-service ER on the county’s north side. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Lake Pointe adds a second full-service hospital option along SH 66.
For most retirees, this means staying in the county for the vast majority of medical needs. That’s the difference between a retirement that flows and one defined by daily inconvenience.
How Much Can Retirees Save on Taxes in Rockwall County?
Texas has no state income tax. Your Social Security, IRA distributions, 401(k) income, and pension checks are all free from state taxation. For a couple drawing $150,000 in annual retirement income, that can mean $10,000 to $20,000 in annual savings compared to high-tax states.
Rockwall County’s consolidated tax rate dropped 13% in 2023. Homeowners 65 and older qualify for an additional $60,000 school district property tax exemption on top of the standard homestead exemption.
The math works.
Is Rockwall, TX Safe for Retirees?
Rockwall’s violent crime rate is 69% below the national average. Property crime is 40% below average. Rockwall ISD is consistently ranked among the best school districts in DFW, which matters for property values and for the grandchildren who might follow you here.
This is a community that knows what it is and protects it.
Why We Opened Our Heath Office
We opened our Heath office because we believe in what Rockwall County is building. We see the same momentum our clients discovered years ahead of us. And we want to be part of it, helping families make smart retirement decisions not from a Dallas office tower, but from right here on the lake.
If you’re thinking about what retirement in Rockwall County could look like for you financially, logistically, and personally, we would genuinely love that conversation.
